Our Story

A gathering place for those drawn to the mountains
a heartwarming alpine retreat full of warm smiles and unforgettable moments.

  • Hotel founder, Yujiro Maruyama

  • In front of Hakuba Sanso,
    Mt. Shirouma Summit (1950s)

Our founder, Yujiro Maruyama, was an esteemed figure in the mountaineering community, known for his bold spirit and years of service as the manager of the summit hut on Mt. Shirouma (Hakuba-dake).
Mt. Shirouma was first opened to mountaineers in 1902 by Teiitsuo Matsuzawa, and has captured the heart and imagination of countless alpinists ever since.
The area around the mountain hut is home to delicate alpine wildflowers, which bloom with the same beauty and abundance as they did generations ago. If you're lucky, you might even spot a kamoshika (Japanese serow) during your hike.
We have several of Yujiro’s own vintage photographs on display inside the hotel?which capture scenes at the mountain hut and on the trail, and offer an authentic, nostalgic, and personal glimpse into the rich history of mountaineering in Hakuba.
Hakuba Alpine Hotel was born from a deep love of all things alpine, and has grown into a place of community, heartfelt encounters, and meaningful memories.

  • Yamaroku Ryokan, the beloved,
long-serving predecessor to Hakuba Alpine Hotel
    affectionately known simply as“Yamaroku”

  • Yujiro was a central figure among the "Hosono Twelve",
the group who developed the Happo-One ski area.
